Summary

This role is responsible for setting up, operating, and maintaining an (OD/ID grinding) machine to produce precision components according to specifications. This position ensures parts meet dimensional accuracy, surface finish requirements, and quality standards. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate OD/ID grinding machines to perform precision grinding on various metal components
  • Read and interpret blueprints, work orders, and engineering drawings
  • Measure parts using micrometers, calipers, bore gauges, and other precision measurement tools
  • Adjust machine feeds, speeds, and wheel dressing as needed to achieve required tolerances
  • Perform routine wheel dressing and changeovers
  • Inspect finished parts for accuracy, surface finish, and conformance to quality standards
  • Monitor machine performance and identify wear, malfunction, or need for maintenance
  • Maintain accurate production and inspection documentation
  • Perform other duties assigned
  • Strong understanding of machining principles, tolerance control, and surface finishing
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and measurement specifications
  • Capable in programming at the control, set up, wheel setup & try out
  • Ability to hold tight tolerances & perform quality checks
  • Maintain the work area and equipment in a clean and orderly condition to safety regulations
  • Proficiency with precision measuring instruments (micrometers, dial indicators, bore gauges, etc.)
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and meet production deadlines
  • Compute numbers, widths, and angles of cutting tools, micrometers, scales, and gauges, and adjust tools to produce specified cuts
  • Finish surfaces of work pieces, using prescribed equipment, grinding wheels and hand tools.
  • Inspect and measure workpieces to ensure that surfaces and dimensions meet specifications.
  • Monitor machine operations to determine whether adjustments are necessary; stop machines when problems occur.
  • Select and mount grinding wheels on machines, according to specifications, using hand tools and applying knowledge of abrasives and grinding procedures.
  • Set up and operate grinding or polishing machines to grind metal parts, tools, or work pieces.
  • Study blueprints or layouts of metal workpieces to determine grinding procedures, and to plan machine setups and operational sequences.

Education and/or Work Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent education and experience.
  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Technical Skills/Physical Requirements

  • Demonstrated interpersonal / leadership skills.
  • Demonstrated independent performance with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to use production management tools including LEAN, material management systems, and maintenance of accurate throughput and quality records.
  • Relevant experience operating industrial or military mechanical equipment.
  • Manual dexterity required to accurately handle and position parts.
  • Walking and standing on the shop floor for extended periods throughout the day.
  • Lifting and transporting materials (20-40 lbs).
  • Ability to comprehend and apply training to operate manufacturing production equipment listed above.
  • Ability to effectively balance priorities and multiple tasks to achieve overall production goals.
  • Must be available to work overtime during periods of high order volume.
  • High degree of computer competency (Spreadsheets, Email, Material Management Systems, etc)
  • Travel generally not required.
